  • Free Avalanche Beacon training ends this Saturday, April 21!

    The final avalanche beacon training clinic of the 2012 snow season will be held this Saturday morning from 9 to 11 AM. The beacon training facility will remain open until the middle or the end of May.

    The facility is located between St. Moritz and Jill's Run and is accessible from the east end of Main Lodge. The clinic and use of the beacon training park is free.

  • Free Avalanche Beacon Training sessions end after April 21

    Come to the avalanche beacon training facility on Mammoth Mountain this Saturday, April 14,  from 9 to 11 AM. Learn how to quickly and efficiently locate buried beacons!  Bring your beacon, shovel and probe. 

    The final free training session will occur on Saturday, April 21. The avalanche beacon training facility will remain open after April 21.

    The facility is located between St. Moritz and Jill's Run and is accessible from the east end of Main Lodge. The clinic and use of the beacon training park is free. 

  • Beacon Basin up and running!

    The Mammoth Mountain avalanche training facility is up and ready for all of us to practice our companion rescue skills. The "Beacon Basin" facility is located between St Moritz and Jill's run and is accessible from the east end of Main Lodge. There is no charge for using the facility. Three beacons are buried so get out there and practice because new snow is coming!

  • Observer Program- Waiting for snow

    We are waiting for new snow. After a good start, volunteer observers and the rest of us need more snow.

  • Volunteer observer program is underway

    After Wednesday's all day course on June Mountain, the volunteer observer program is off to a great start. Many different types of snowpit tests were done from the shovel tilt, compression test, the ECT and the Rutschblock test. Observation guidelines for collecting snow, weather and avalanche observations were all covered in a clear and concise format thanks to the excellent teaching by Howie Schwartz of Sierra Mountain Guides. Now all we need is more snow!

  • Volunteer Observer Program update

    The Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center needs weather, snowpack and avalanche observations. You have the opportunity to participate in the creation of the avalanche advisory by submitting avalanche and snowpack observations.

    A meeting for volunteer observers is scheduled for 9AM on January 17, 2012. We will meet at the Forest Service auditorium for about an hour of discussion on where, when and how to collect snowpack and avalanche observations.

    The SWAG upgrade course will be held on January 25, 2012.

  • Observer program

    The Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center needs weather, snowpack and avalanche observations. You have the opportunity to participate in the creation of the avalanche advisory by submitting avalanche and snowpack observations.

    Volunteer observers must have an AIARE Level 1 course and interest in the snowpack. A SWAG upgrade course is required and will be provided during the time frame of January 23-25, 2012.
