  • Observer Program- Waiting for snow

We are waiting for new snow. After a good start, volunteer observers and the rest of us need more snow.

  • Volunteer observer program is underway

After Wednesday's all day course on June Mountain, the volunteer observer program is off to a great start. Many different types of snowpit tests were done from the shovel tilt, compression test, the ECT and the Rutschblock test. Observation guidelines for collecting snow, weather and avalanche observations were all covered in a clear and concise format thanks to the excellent teaching by Howie Schwartz of Sierra Mountain Guides. Now all we need is more snow!

  • Volunteer Observer Program update

The Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center needs weather, snowpack and avalanche observations. You have the opportunity to participate in the creation of the avalanche advisory by submitting avalanche and snowpack observations.

A meeting for volunteer observers is scheduled for 9AM on January 17, 2012. We will meet at the Forest Service auditorium for about an hour of discussion on where, when and how to collect snowpack and avalanche observations.

The SWAG upgrade course will be held on January 25, 2012.

  • Spring snow and avalanche statement

There are three avalanche concerns for the remainder of the spring.

    Avalanche Concern  #1:

  • Sherwins Egress

Signage marking the only legal route from the base of the Sherwins Range back to town has finally been put into the ground! A series of three red signs guides exiting skiers and snowboarders over an approved path that traverses the Snowcreek Golf Course to the north side of the private gate across Ranch Road, at which point recreationists may cross back into town via the public-access easement on the west side of the gate.   Click here for more info.
