ESAC is excited to announce new Backcountry Access beacon checkers at trailheads for The Sherwins. The program was made possible in partnership with the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Mammoth Lakes Recreation, and the Mammoth Lakes Trail System.
New signs (located at the Sherwin Creek Winter Staging Area, Mill City Site (Old Mammoth Road), and Tamarack/Sherwin Boot Pack include signage with a map and basic avalache awareness information, BCA beacon chekers, and trail counters to help us get an idea of usage patterns. This is an exciting new program that we hope to grow in the years to come with these partners.
Two of these signs (at the Sherwins Trailhead and Mill City) are currently operational - the third at the bottom of The Sherwins bootpack - we hope to have online in the next couple weeks.
We are also partnering with Rakkup to offer users to The Sherwins & Punta Bardini area free access to a digital guidebook of that terrain. More information is available at http://rakkup.com/guidebooks/backcountry-skiing-california-eastern-sierra.
