Date and time of observation:
March 16, 2010 (All day)
Region:
Bishop Area
Observation Type:
Snowpack
Route:

Skiied to top of Bishop Bowl (~10,500 ft). Variable conditions on ascent, from spring type corn on initial steep moraine, to firm wind pack, to patches of 4 inches of good powder on due N facing trees.
We skiied the most obvious East facing gully directly above Aspendell. PIt was dug just below the top of the gully at approx 10,100ft at 1200pm. Angle estimated to be 40 degrees. Top 5-7cm wet snow from recent wind loading. Poorly bonded to layers below and starting small wet slides with aggressive ski cutting. The biggest of the wet slides was about 10ft wide and ran 20ft. Below the wet layer, snow appeared well bonded and dry, though with rapid warming of these layers they may become wet in the next few days.
Skiing was pretty good, wet powder with areas of corn on aspects with less wind loading.

Red Flags:
Rapid warming
