Avalanche Observation : February 06, 2010

Date:
February 6, 2010
Observation Type:
Avalanche Observation
Location
Region:
Mammoth Lakes Area
Elevation:
8,900
Route:

Skier's left Mammoth Rock Chute

Weather:

Cloudy, unusually humid conditions, almost no wind

Avalanche Activity:

We ski cut the top of the chute, and got a small pocket to release. After two more ski cuts, the entire width of the chute fractured (8" crown) and quickly avalanched. Virtually all of the new snow was cleared from the couloir.
It left behind a firm bed surface that could be problematic in the future.

Comments:

The chute filled in well after the last storm, and the downed tree that is usually visible in the middle of the couloir is buried.
