Avalanche Observation : March 07, 2010
Skiied off the top of June Mtn this morning and toward the Hourglass and San Joaquin Mtn. A pit at the base of the Hourglass showed the top 5-7cm to be poorly bonded to the layer below. Next layer of weakness was approximately 25cm deep and required considerably more force to shear (sorry no pit profile). We saw no obvious cracking or whoomping anywhere during the day.
Must have been cold last night since there were what looked like small hoar crystals on the surface for much of the skin up the Hourglass. From the top of the Negatives we headed down and north into the Fern Creek Drainage. We were aggressive in ski cutting any short, steep sections but only got the top 5cm or so to slide. These were small, non-propagating sloughs running 10-20ft.
Temps were warming as we climbed a NE facing gully toward the top of Carson Pass. Snow is the sun starting to be affected but no pinwheels seen.
Then skiied the North Bowl of Carson Peak. Mostly boot deep powder with only the top 5 cm sloughing. Same story in Devil's Slide. Great skiing throughout.
Mostly sunny, with snowshowers to the South and West during the day. Warm in the sun.
Frequent small, non-propagating sloughs of 5cm depth.
