Went to check on the rain- snow line and accumulation rate at higher elevation. My intention was to try to drive up the Virginia Lakes Road. Just below Conway Summit, the precipitation that had mostly been wet snow or almost rain in the Mono Basin today turned to snow. At 1600 this afternoon it was 32 degrees F at 8100 ft and snowing at a rate of S-1. New snow accumulation from today at 1600 was 10 to 12 cm of moist snow with a layer of Graupel on the surface. I didn’t want to risk getting stuck on the unplowed road up higher so I toured around the meadow at Conway summit. The sky was fully obscured by thick low hanging clouds, winds were light with gusts to moderate from the SW. I am guessing that snow depths up higher in the drainage are much deeper.
The snowfall rate in the Mono Basin increased sharply around 1830 tonight to S 2 or even more.
