Toured up into The Sherwin's today. At 11:30, we recorded the snow temp to be -8.5 degrees C at 8,000' with 27 degrees F air temp on a 30-40 degree slope. Cloud coverage arrived around 12:00, and we noticed a sudden drop in air temperature. Sun crust observed on ridgeline S/SE facing aspects. Dendrites (3-4mm) were found preserved under a 1 inch wind slab on an E Aspect at 9,800'. The first 20cm of this aspect had a substantial temperature gradient leading us to believe that facet formation was taking place. Snowfall on top of this could cause a possible weak layer. We performed a Rutschblock Test at 1315 on the same E aspect resulting in RB6. Evidence of cornices/wind slab was observed from below Sherwin Peak. Sheltered NW-NE aspects retained good, non-reactive snow. We did not experience the 30-50mph NW winds forecasted - 5mph at the most.
