Started out from Aspen springs around 0915 on a heavily tracked out first 750-1000 feet or so that was already baking in the sun. Upper third of the mountain was relatively well shaded, including the gullies and even the broader lower faces and some ridgelines, and appeared to remain so through our time there until 1330 or so. We experienced no significant wind and saw no drifts. Ski penetration was about 10 cm. We found lots of open untracked space along skier's left on a broad north-facing sparsely treed face, starting slightly above a false summit which was not unexpectedly covered with some sparse mild sastrugi and very hard wind board into which my pole tips barely left an indentation. Otherwise below these convexities there was a good at least 1-1.5 ft of untouched, somewhat heavy powder. We saw no evidence of avalanches, no whoomphing or shooting cracks. We decided not to go toward the summit ridge since the recent winds as well as observed wind effect around the lower false summit was not very inspiring. Another guy out there was skiing one of the gullies from about halfway up and did not seem disappointed, but we are pretty sure he didn't start at the top.
