Climbed to 9980' on the N side of Red Mtn. this morning. On the drive up, Basin Mtn was flagging from a westerly wind; no other snow transport observed throughout the day. Saw the crown on Mt Tom from a few days ago. Yikes!
Dug a pit 145cm deep at 9980', N aspect, exposed to wind NTL.
total depth 255cm. from the surface down:
0-14cm F powder
15-20cm 1F wind board
21-92cm right side up F to 1F gradient
93-95cm soft layer (F?)
96-134cm P consolidated
135cm and down F rounding(?) facets
Surface conditions were a mix of mostly soft powder and, degrees of wind affect, and developing sun crusts.
