The snowpack is right side up and very stable at the moment.
This week the AIARE Pro 1 is in Mammoth to train our observation and risk management skills.
Students focused on Weather Plot and Snow Profile Observations early in the week.
Below is a photo snow profile from the Reds Lake Area looking at snowpack structure. Even though we have low avalanche danger that doesn’t mean the snowpack is simple.
Clear and mild in sheltered areas, but with a crisp north wind in exposed areas.
Snowpack structure summary at a range scale:
Lower – In certain sheltered areas basal facets exist. Thickness varies from 0cm to 40cm
Middle – 1 finger to knife hard RG. 100-200cm thick
Upper – Surface FC, RGwp or
MFcr 1-30cm on surface depending on aspect to sun and wind, and elevation
See snow profile documented in photos and through snow pilot.
