Snowpit Observations
More detailed information about the snowpack:

We toured into above treeline terrain today to look at how forecasted overnight winds affected the recent snow.  During the tour we saw no cracking, whumpfing or recent avalanche activity.

Temps were much warmer today than yesterday.  31 degrees in June at 830 this morning, with calm wind and 50% cloud cover. The summits of Mt Wood and the higher peaks near the Yosemite border were obscured by clouds.  Cloud cover increased during the day to 100%. No snow was observed blowing over ridge tops and winds at the top of June were light with moderate gusts.

Touring up the hourglass, we noticed some areas of stout windboard (5-8cm thick) in the most exposed spots.  Yesterday's skin track was mostly covered.  Shleltered areas still held soft snow.  By the time we reached the top of the Hourglass, light snow was falling, wind was moderate and air temp was -6C. Wind was transporting some snow on the surface when gusting.

We continued toward Carson Peak, finding soft snow in sheltered, north facing, areas below the ridgeline.  All other aspects had a melt freeze crust from yesterday's sun.  Moderate wind affect at the top of Carson Bowl (see photo) but mostly our skis could penetrate through this layer. Below the ridgeline, surface conditons were mostly dense powder with some wind affect in places. Dropping down to the road, the greenhouse effect was very noticable starting at ~8500ft.  While snow was still soft in north facing terrain, our turns in the trees would turn to rollerballs that would gain momentum and grow to about 12 inch diameter before breaking apart. Lower down still, snow was slightly wet but still fun to ski.
