Key Points

I toured from Tobacco Flat Rd. up to the shoulder of Mt. Aggie today to see if strong SW winds were building wind slabs.

  • There was plenty of evidence of blowing snow throughout the day. Snow plumes were visible from 395 above Bloody Mountain and on the shoulder of Laurel and McGee.
  • The blowing snow was primarily composed of small faceted grains (.5 to 1mm).
  • On E and NE terrain on Mono Jim and Mt. Morrison, wind driven facets tumbled to the valley floor rather than drifting in steep start zones.
  • Wind deposits formed primarily on lower angle and concave terrain features. These drifts were dense, but not cohesive. The facets remained loose.
