Skiing/Snowboarding
Location:
Mammoth Rock Bowl
Significant natural avalanche (likely wind slab) in Mammoth Rock Bowl that ran essentially the full path (around 1100-1200 vertical feet). The avalanche ran over both bluffs and was within 30-50 feet of one of the normal skin tracks up to Mammoth Rock. I could not see the crown of the avalanche as it was obscured by snow/wind, but I'm assuming it ran from the Sherwin ridge where the bowl typically gets wind loaded. Certainly a large D3 avalanche. I haven't seen it run this far in years.
Did you observe any avalanches?
Yes
Avalanche Type:
Soft Slab
Size:
Size 3: Could bury and destroy a car, damage a truck, destroy a wood frame house, or break a few trees
Elevation:
8700
Aspect:
NE
Comments:
Large avalanche in Mammoth Rock Bowl ran basically the full path down both bluffs and within 30-50 feet of the skin track up Mammoth Rock Bowl. 800-1000 vertical feet and 300-500 feet wide. Broke a few small trees buried under the wind blow snow that I skied over.
