Comments:
After skinning up old man bowl we skied down the ridge between Oldman bowl and the east faces on Mono Jim. We were looking at the possibility of skiing the east face where there were some tracks from other skiers. We decided against that and I began skiing down the south east facing aspect of the old man bowl. I started my decent and the snow broke maybe 15 feet above me. I slide approximately 1300 feet, passing a car sized rock on the left that the snow was shooting over and exiting the on the right side. I sustained no physical injuries and my head and body were above the snow the whole time. Presumably because I was relatively close to the crown, most of the sliding snow was in front of me. I was not buried and skied out of the slide once it stopped.
The crown was somewhere between 1 and 2 feet deep and 75-100? feet across. The avalanche was about 1500 ft from crown to the very bottom. Possibly wind slab. The slope angle was between 31 - 38 degrees.
*ESAC Forecasters conducted a site investigation on 3/27 and confirmed this as a persistent slab avalanche*
